King of Hearts, Part 3: The Anointing (Part 1 of 2)

⌥ Type: Wednesday Evening Bible Study

🎬 Series: King of Hearts

⛪ Sermon: Part 3 - The Anointing (Part 1 of 2)

🗣️ Speaker: Pastor Tom Van Kempen

📜 Description: The anointing — a concept deeply rooted in Scripture from Genesis through the New Testament — is not merely a mysterious spiritual buzzword, but a tangible, personal relationship with the Holy Spirit that empowers believers for every area of life. Through the history of anointing oil in the Old Testament, from Jacob's altar to Moses' sacred recipe to the consecration of priests and kings, we see God consistently using oil as a symbol of His Spirit being poured out on people and things set apart for His purposes. Just as Jesus Himself was anointed before His ministry began, every believer today has access to that same fresh, overflowing anointing — but it requires humility, ongoing relationship, and a willingness to be continually filled rather than coasting on yesterday's encounter with God.

ℹ️ Tip: The video is set to start at the beginning of the sermon, but you can scrub the playhead to any part of the service. ℹ️

  • Sometimes Wednesday nights are just a little bit better because you get to just rest in the Lord, wait on the Lord, expect Him to do something in our midst.

    And he does.

    He will never disappoint.

    Who can say amen?

I mean, I was listening to that third worship song, and they were talking about come rest on us, Holy Spirit.

And that's really what tonight's message is is about.

And so, you know, I want to welcome you here tonight.

    It's great to have you.

But as you know, we're doing something a little different.

And that is our Sunday mornings and sun and Wednesday nights are kind of going hand in hand.

And so this is actually a part of our summer series.

    It's called King of Hearts.

And uh it's about the life of David.

So on May 31st, we did our first one.

On June the 7th, we did our second one on both Sunday mornings.

And now here's message number three, and it's Wednesday night And uh actually as I was preparing for this message, it just kept getting longer and longer and longer.

And so so we're gonna try and really mess things up, and what I mean by that is we're gonna we're gonna do King of Hearts number three. three tonight part one and king of hearts number three part two next Wednesday night but in between we're going to do King of Hearts number four So please don't be confused by this, alright?

And uh the reason is is because of the the topic that we're discussing tonight.

    It's entitled The Anointing.

And so we have uh a little whiteboard here with us tonight, or I guess it would be considered more of a a blackboard.

And uh when you hear that word anointing or that phrase anointing I need to know what comes to your mind.

    Holy Spirit.

    Holy Spirit.

    Okay.

So I'm gonna write Holy Spirit down.

    What was the other one?

    Move of God.

    Move of God.

    Okay.

Oh, now you're quoting scripture on me.

    Break.

    The yoke.

    What else?

    Anybody?

    Freedom.

    Power.

    Power, I like it.

    What else?

    Drink.

Okay, this slide has said enough.

    We're moving over here somewhere.

    Strength.

    What was that?

    Strength.

    Strength?

    Okay.

They want to be the teacher's pets over there, you know.

    What blessed blessed blessing.

    What else?

    Fire.

    Peace.

And f I got fire in there, I heard it.

    Fire Now now watch this.

We were talking about fresh fire.

That's the theme for the year.

The scriptures filled with people asking for fresh fire Anointing.

And it's talking about that right there.

    What what else?

    Anything?

    What was it?

    Clarity.

Clarity and what was this one?

    Flow.

    Flow.

Man, you're getting the the alliteration going here.

    I really like it.

Freedom, fire, flow, you're you must be from pastor lineage or something.

    And clarity.

    That's really good too.

    So I I I mean Here's the funny thing.

I grew up in a church where they talked about anointing a lot.

    Okay?

    That message pastor was anointed.

That praise and worship leader, they're anointed.

And I heard it on a regular basis, but it was always cloaked in this air of mysticism.

And so nobody in my church really knew what they were talking about.

Anointed sounded super spiritual, but few people ever talked about it or preached about it or taught about it.

Now, some of you might have gone to churches where you've never even heard the phrase the anointing before.

Because it's it's just not emphasized in most churches in America.

Most churches just do what they do.

Did you know there was there was one pastor a number of years ago.

He said that if the Holy Spirit took his hand off the church, ninety percent of what was happening in the church would never change.

    That's right.

    Right.

    Did you hear that?

In other words, a majority of what most churches do is in the flesh.

    It's not in the spirit.

Now, I'm not saying the majority of what most churches do is bad.

You can work really hard in the flesh.

You can do good works in the flesh But the question is, has God asked you to do it?

And has the Holy Spirit empowered you to do it?

Those are the things that we should be focused on.

Those are are the things that we should consider and and think about on a regular and consistent basis.

So tonight We're going to talk about all of this stuff.

Let's see if I can even read my notes.

    1 Samuel chapter 16, verse 13.

We're going to where we left off last time on Sunday and we finished with verse 13 and this is what it says.

It says then Samuel took the horn of oil.

So I need you to understand that this is nothing more than probably a ram's horn, okay?

And they used it as a container.

And so they filled it up with some oil, and that this is what uh Samuel was asked to do by God Himself And he anointed David in the midst of his brothers.

And the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.

So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.

Now, now, how many understand that Romans chapter 15 teaches that all of the stories in the Old Testament have relevance for today?

That we can learn principles and ideas and things because the stories of the Old Testament still contain the New Testament gospel.

It's just shrouded sometimes a little bit.

It's just a little mysterious, but in the New Testament, everything is made light We can see what it is that God's doing.

And so they filled this ram's horn with probably an olive oil-based mixture, and they literally poured it on David's head.

    I mean, it's wet, it's sticky, it's gooey.

When you read the scripture, it's not a little dabble, do you?

It is poured out on the head and it just goes running down so much that it gets to the very bottom of the garments of most people.

It sounds gross And it probably was, to be quite honest.

So when we're talking about the anointing, we're going to dive into, first of all, the history of the anointing oil itself.

Because this is important for us to understand.

So so tonight is I would classify tonight as a teaching, just so you know I would classify tonight as a good time to take notes.

And so whether you do that on your phone or you have paper or you can get on online on our our website, uh I would recommend that you you take notes, you save this, you study this, you you think about this because To me, this is one of the most important messages that we're going to be talking about all year long.

    Because we need the anointing.

    Who can say amen?

So, where did this practice originate?

And what for that we need to go all the way back to the book of Genesis.

    Genesis chapter 28.

And in that chapter, Jacob anoints a rock.

    Anybody familiar with the story?

    You guys remember?

    He anoints a rock.

Now, your Bible might say a pillar, but the scripture tells us that he ran away from Esau.

He's in the middle of the wilderness, and he's tired, so he takes a rock to sleep on that night.

And in the middle of the night, he has this radical encounter with God.

He has this dream where he's seeing angels and and it appears like the Son of God.

So when he wakes up Jacob feels like something divine has taken place in his life.

And he wants to memorialize this event.

And so it's interesting, he believed oil represented something significant So we don't know where this idea came from.

It just is sprung on us in Genesis chapter 28.

    We can guess.

We can surmise, but I am sure somewhere along the line God had spoken to somebody, Abraham, Isaac, or Jacob, and and made some correlation between oil and and his Spirit, his presence, his desires, his power, a lot of the things that we wrote up here on the board, okay?

And that's what God had done with one of the patriarchal fathers And here Jacob is actually doing something about it.

So early in biblical history, people connected oil and God.

Now we move to the second book of the Bible, Exodus.

And in this book, Moses is commanded to make a holy anointing oil.

So it's like the The level is being raised right here.

God is trying to communicate a message.

He's trying to teach something that is going to be really important, not just for the children of Israel, but for us today.

And so Moses is commanded to make this holy anointing oil, and it's supposed to be a specific blend of spices and oils.

Now, when I started seeing this, I was kind of tickled in my imagination because Colonel Sanders needed 11 herbs and spices for his recipe.

    Okay?

And God put together something a little bit simpler.

It was four spices and approximately a gallon of olive oil.

So they took a a bunch of of this, you know, cinnamon and cassius and and uh Calamus, I believe, and there's maybe one other if I've got it here.

    I can't find it.

Four different spices, and there's at least two gallons total in this mixture But please do not think of it as viscous.

    It's rather thick.

    It's really sticky.

    It's it's really, really messy.

And so when they poured it on someone's head, it probably took its time going down.

It wasn't an an instantaneous thing.

Because of all of the different spices that were put in.

So KFC's recipe was a secret, but Moses recipe was Sacred.

    Say sacred.

    Sacred.

    So KFC is not sacred.

Amen Coca-Cola, although their recipe is locked away in a safe somewhere, it's not sacred, it's just secret.

    But this was sacred.

    It was set apart.

    It was special.

It was never To be duplicated.

God said, I don't want you to use this for any other circumstances at all.

Which means this was probably the original copyright.

You can't use it in any other way.

Never to be used flippantly, never to be used casually.

Now you might be thinking, why are you telling us this, Pastor?

Because this is speaking to the anointing in the New Testament.

You can never take the anointing for granted.

You never use your anointing flippantly.

You never use your anointing casually.

You make sure the Lord is leading every single time in that you're actually operating. the spirit, not counterfeiting the spirit.

Because that happens a lot in modern days.

This leads us to one of I think one of the most confusing doctrines in the Bible, and that's the doctrine of holiness.

If we go back to the 1800s, there was something called the holiness movement.

And during the holiness movement, they concluded that everything except going to church was sin And if you think I'm exaggerating, I'm not.

In the early years of the 20th century, many of the Pentecostal and Protestant churches made you sign documents that said you would not drink root beer because root beer Beer came in a bottle that looked like beer and the appearance of evil was frowned upon.

I was told in 1970 I could not play Old Maid because it was too much like poker and gambling.

So the holiness movement didn't create holiness, it created legalism in most instances.

And so we need to really understand.

The Old Testament seems to say that some things, places, and people are holy, while others are not.

So we in the 20th and 21st century took that and say some people are holy and some are not.

Some things are holy and some are not.

And we go down the same path.

But But that is not what the Bible is actually saying.

What is being communicated is that holiness only comes from God.

He is the only holy and only God can make something holy So that's what he was communicating in the Old Testament.

By anointing something with oil, he was trying to tell people, I now have made this holy.

He wants them to know that I'm going to make all of you holy someday.

    That's the long-term goal.

Through the blood of Jesus Christ.

    This was the plan.

But the holy anointing oil originally is used to set things apart for God.

So who can tell me what things were set apart for God in the Old Testament?

Go back to the book of Exodus.

What was set apart for God?

    Things.

    What?

    I can't hear Shotra.

    I can't hear.

    Burnt offerings?

    Burnt offerings?

Well well let's go before burnt offerings.

What did they have to build before we got burnt offerings?

    The tabernacle.

    Yeah.

So so the tabernacle was one of the first things, but but even before that, do you know the scripture actually says that they they anointed the clasps And the bars and the poles and the hangings and the two different altars And the Ark of the Covenant and the tent itself and two different gates.

And it just goes on and lists all of these things.

Then it starts talking about the the priest's garments and the ephod in the breastplate and uh the crown and all of these different things.

So in the book of of Exodus it gives you this list of dozens and dozens of things.

    Utensils.

    The holy laver.

    The table of the showbread.

The list just goes on and there's dozens, maybe over a hundred different things that are specially anointed.

Now, here's what I find interesting.

All of those things were typically just sprinkled with a little bit of anointing.

Just sprinkled, just enough to communicate that these things are dead-de-da-da-da-da-da-da.

    I'm not speaking in tongues.

    They're dedicated to God.

    Alright?

And so that's what I want you to see that that these things were were dedicated to God, but the holy anointing is also used to set people apart to God.

    Who can say amen?

You know he wants you set apart for God today.

So this is what I want to do right now.

I want you to bow your heads.

And I want you to think, is there something in my life that I can dedicate to God right now?

Is there something in my life that that I hold to myself and God's wanting it?

Is there something in my life that is trying to invade on God's space?

And I just need to take a moment to dedicate it to the Lord.

    Let me pray.

Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I am hoping that in the middle of a sermon that you'd begin to speak to our hearts.

We don't have to wait till the end for an altar call to allow you to move in our hearts and our minds.

And so, Father God, I'm sensing that you're wanting to do something even now.

I'm sensing, Father God, that that some of us have brought things in that that we kind of believe are our little thing.

And you are asking us to turn it over to you.

You're asking us to allow you to anoint it so that it is completely dedicated to your service, your glory, and your kingdom.

I pray this today in Jesus' holy and precious name.

    And together everybody says, Amen.

So the first people anointed for holy service were priests.

Aaron, again, is one of the first.

The actual anointing takes place, I believe, in Leviticus chapter 8.

And uh he's anointed and then his his boys are standing behind him and they they get fully decked out in their priestly robes and and all of that stuff and and they are uh uh they're not sprinkled though.

    What happens to them?

    It's poured.

    That's right.

    It's poured.

    A lot of oil.

I think it's interesting that things are sprinkled and people are poured.

Because here in the New Testament, there's this implication that God wants to pour his spirit.

Now, it's not just an implication, it says God wants to pour out his spirit on all flesh.

He wants it on your boys, on your girls, on men and women, old and young.

    It doesn't matter.

He wants to pour out his spirit, who can say amen.

    This is what God wants.

    A pouring out.

    Kings were anointed.

    David was anointed.

    Now again, 1 Samuel 16, 1.

Remember, fill your horn and oil and go.

I am sending you to Jesse, for I have provided myself, or I see me. a king, the scripture says, among his sons.

So we know based on verse 1 and verse 13 that this original anointing of David was he was set apart to do something special.

He was set apart to be a king, a king of Israel.

He's being set apart from his brothers.

Remember, we talked about this this past Sunday, that that Jesse brought out all the older brothers first.

But David is set apart from his brothers.

David is set apart from all the other people in the country because this is going to be such an important task.

It's also important to understand that Saul was also anointed.

And at the beginning of Saul's kingship.

He was not as arrogant and filled with pride as we see later in chapters 13, 14, 15, and 16, and so on.

    Saul originally was very humble.

If you remember the story at all, um Samuel shows up, anoints him with oil, and then uh a while later, he's telling everybody, well, the king's gonna come from the tribe of Benjamin, and the and the The king's gonna come from the the house of Cush and the king is is Saul and Saul was nowhere to be found.

He was hiding in the baggage because he was intimidated by the calling, by the anointing that was placed on him.

And I think that's one of the reasons why he got it originally, is because he had to rely on God to be the king.

So in both Saul's example and David's, the anointing flowed in an environment of humility, submission, and sacrifice.

And when I say sacrifice, I'm talking about worship.

    Prophets.

You might say, Pastor, what about the prophets?

    Weren't they anointed?

And the answer is yes, but they were never physically anointed that we know of.

There's no examples of a prophet being anointed with oil the same way that the kings and the priests were.

But it says this in Isaiah chapter 61: The Spirit has anointed me to preach.

The gospel to the poor, to heal, to open prison doors, and all of those other things.

So Isaiah communicated in his book that he was anointed.

But here's where people get confused.

They start linking the oil itself and power.

They're not one and the same.

The oil was never the power.

The oil simply represented or pointed to the power.

That's important because I need you to understand that the the idea here is obedience, not methodology.

Even today, there are people who believe that by laying on of hands, that they can bestow special gifts on you.

Only if God tells them to do that.

You don't get to manipulate the anointing the way you see fit.

The anointing is distributed on how the Holy Spirit sees fit.

So we have to be really, really careful in these circumstances, and we need to understand that the anointing symbolizes. the Holy Spirit.

    Okay?

So so if you're married and you have a wedding ring on right now, I want you to to show me your wedding ring.

    Okay?

    Oh look at that.

A newly married couple here, a newly married couple back over there, showing their No no keep them up, keep them up.

So uh is the ring marriage?

No, you can put your hands down.

The ring is a symbol of what it is that you have.

The ring is not the the marriage, the relationship.

    Is the marriage oil?

Is the symbol and the Holy Spirit is the reality behind that symbol.

So this is what you need to understand: the anointing is a person.

Now again, I'm just beginning this, okay?

Because you might say I I I I thought the anointing was the power.

I thought the anointing was the fire.

Well, without the person you get none of the other things.

    Does that make sense?

The anointing is the Holy Spirit actively involved in your life And so, if the anointing is dependent upon the person of the Holy Spirit, then you need to understand you can have a personal relationship with the anointing.

The anointing is not just a thing.

It's not just something out there The anointing is a person that you can have a relationship with.

And it will operate in your life based upon the fact that your relationship with the anointing is growing.

You can't take it for granted.

    Your relationship needs to deepen.

Your relationship needs to be abiding.

    That means consistent and constant.

Listen to what the Bible says.

    Psalm 23, 5.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil.

    My cup runs over.

So, if you are in relationship with the anointing It's not just a personal relationship.

This can be a very powerful relationship.

It can completely change your mind your the way you live okay so let me ask you this question if you're related to the police of ch or the chief of police do you think there would be any benefits to you I'm not saying that that you know anyone does anything unethical, but what I'm saying is is if Tom Van Kempen is the chief of police And someone pulls over one of my kids and their name is Ted Van Kempen, and the police officer looks at that license plate.

I bet you they're a lot less likely to give them a ticket Right?

    That's just the reality.

How about if you know the President of the United States?

Do you think there'd be any benefits?

I I remember when my dad owned his own store back in Aberdeen, South Dakota I would walk into that store and because of the relationship, I could go places nobody else went.

I had access to things that nobody else had access to.

    Why?

Because of the powerful relationship I had with the owner.

Is everyone hearing what I'm saying?

This word anoint in this particular scripture is the Hebrew word dashin.

    Listen to this.

    It means to satisfy.

So, a lot of times we think the anointing is for service, which it is, okay?

But I think you also need to understand that the anointing serves you once in a while.

Because the Holy Spirit, listen to the verse again.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil.

You can be anointed by the Holy Spirit in the middle of a battle.

    Who can say amen?

    See, anointing isn't a one-time thing.

Anointing is something we need again and again and again and again.

This is why relationship is so important.

The word oil here is another Hebrew word that means anointing oil or it means richness.

So your relationship with the anointing should create a richness in your life.

And other people should be benefiting from your relationship with God.

    You that's the word.

    Overflowing is the word.

As a matter of fact, did you know that one of the words for anointing in the Old Testament means overflow?

So the whole idea is that that you don't just get enough for you.

You get so much anointing that it's It's overflowing onto your family and your friends and your church and your community.

    This is what we're needing.

This is what we're oftentimes lacking.

Is we barely have enough to get through the day.

And God says, I have an overflow available for you in Jesus' name.

    Who can say amen?

    I have an overflow.

    But let me be clear.

    The anointing cannot be manipulated.

Since the Holy Spirit is a person, that means the Holy Spirit has a mind.

    The Holy Spirit has emotions.

The Holy Spirit has a will.

And in referencing the Holy Spirit, listen to what John says.

John says the wind or the spirit blows where He desires.

The anointing, the move of the Spirit, is totally and completely dependent upon the Spirit Himself You cannot manipulate him in any way.

As a matter of fact, if you're not careful, you can lose a certain degree of the anointing.

Now, it's not the same as in the Old Testament.

I need you to understand this.

But we'll get to it in a second, because in 1 Samuel 16, 14, the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul.

But the reason I'm bringing this up right now is three chapters later, listen to what it says.

The Spirit of God was upon Saul also, and he went on and prophesied.

    Is that not crazy?

God withdrew the Spirit from Saul, but the Spirit on one occasion said, you know what?

I'm going to go back on this guy anyway.

I'm still gonna prove that I'm God and I'm gonna use somebody that nobody thinks is usable.

It can happen to any of us at any time.

    Alright?

But you cannot manipulate the anointing, but you can limit the anointing of God in your life How?

It says despise not prophesying in the Bible.

It says, quench not the Spirit in the Bible.

It says that the Holy Spirit can be grieved.

Remember, the Holy Spirit has emotions.

Have you noticed how easy it is to grieve or offend people in our world today?

I mean one wrong text and you're cut off from a family member, right?

Um one wrong Facebook post And you can be hated by 50% of the people in the in America just because uh you take one side or the other.

I mean, it's so easy to offend other human beings.

Now, I don't believe it's that easy to offend the Holy Spirit But the Holy Spirit is grieved when we purposely and intentionally disregard his leanings and leadings.

When we don't strive to operate in not just the gifts of the Spirit, but the fruit of the Spirit as well.

It's important to mature and grow and become exactly who God wants us to be.

And this is one of the reasons why it's it's also important to understand that the anointing is described as a gift.

    In the Bible.

It's a gift from God, a gift from Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit isn't reserved for a select few of spiritual Christians.

Like it was reserved for a select few in the Old Testament.

Now the anointing is for everybody.

    Can anyone say amen?

Jesus did not bestow the anointing on David.

    I'm sorry, not Jesus.

Jesse did not bestow the anointing on David.

    It's not a family thing.

You don't get it because your father had it or your mother had it or your grandfather had it.

There are no grandchildren in the kingdom of God.

Did you know that It's nothing but sons and daughters.

Samuel did not give David the anointing.

He put physical oil on him, but it was God who placed the Spirit on him.

You don't get the anointing by going to school.

There's not a PhD in anointing, just so you know As a matter of fact, to be honest, some of the seminaries in America are the driest places in the world.

I'm just letting you know that education does not make an anointed Christian in any way, shape, or form Now, I'm not against education.

I've got a a couple of uh classes under my belt, but but you are not a better Christian just because you took a class You might be prepared in some ways, but without the anointing of the Holy Spirit, you should not lead anything in Jesus' name.

    Here's what's really important.

How many of you would like more wisdom in your life?

    Yeah?

Would anybody like more courage in their lives?

    Yeah, yeah.

    More discernment probably.

    Well, congratulations.

You're asking for things the Holy Spirit specializes in.

And God wants everyone to have the anointing.

Do you guys remember the story of Moses and when he got really discouraged and told, God, I can't do this anymore?

But in this particular story, God says, okay, I'm gonna share some anoint uh anointing with some other elders in in the body And Moses is like, yeah.

And so God says, uh call 70.

And 70 is a round number.

It was probably 72, but it's a round number.

He says, uh call these elders, and and I'm going to place my spirit on them too.

So So you'll have people sharing the burden.

Well, two of the guys didn't show up for the meeting, if you remember this.

And when the Spirit of God came upon the 70, the Spirit of God also came on the two who didn't show up.

And they start prophesying in the camp away from where all the action is.

And someone comes running and says, oh Moses, those guys are doing what they're not supposed to do.

And listen to what Moses says.

Then Moses says to them, Are you zealous for my sake?

    Oh, that All say all.

Oh, that all the Lord's people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them.

This was God's plan from the very beginning.

It was sin and the hardness of people's hearts that forced God's hand, so to speak, into moving at such a slow pace, but it was so that revelation could catch up eventually.

See, you and I are the benefit or the beneficiaries of thousands of years of godly revelation.

I hope you didn't wake up one day and go, man, I'm so smart.

    God's given me so much.

If it wasn't for Adam, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob The judges, the prophets, David, Jesus, Peter, the apostles, Paul, all of them.

We would be in the dark today.

It's because of their experiences that we have learned anything.

And every year God continues to speak.

God continues to open up our eyes to things.

And that's why I think it's important that when we talk about the gifts of the Spirit, that we understand that they are an expression of the anointing.

    And here's what's interesting.

1 Peter 4. 10 says, as each one has received a gift.

So this scripture teaches that everyone has a gift of some kind.

This is the word charisma uh gift.

Uh the beginning of that word is is C-H-A-R-I-S, which is grace in the uh Greek language.

So these gifts are are given by the hand of God, not because we deserve it.

    Who can say amen?

    The Holy Spirit chooses.

Not only does he choose what gift you get, he chooses the level of your anointing.

    Did you know that?

Go to 1 Corinthians chapter 12.

It talks about the amount of the distribution of this gift.

So God gives certain gifts through the spirit to people, but also the amount of anointing that you receive.

So so some people have a uh an anointing to heal everyone and they come in contact with.

And some people have a mid-sized anointing to heal.

And some people have no anointing or just a small anointing.

Be satisfied with what God gives you.

    Say amen.

I mean that's what we should be.

    There are wisdom gifts.

This was actually articulated in the Old Testament when they anointed the head.

I want you to think about this.

They anointed the head because it's wisdom, it's insight, it's divine knowledge that we need.

    There are power gifts.

    There are leadership gifts.

And the list goes on and on and on.

The anointing needs to be refreshed.

    I already alluded to this.

Exodus 29 tells us that an offering needed to be presented every morning and every evening.

And with that offering, listen to this.

    A flour and oil mix.

Oil was presented every morning and every evening.

So there is a need for a continual anointing.

Psalm 92. 10 says, I have been anointed with fresh anoint Oil.

Yesterday's anointing is not sufficient for today's assignment.

Who can say amen requires a fresh new flow of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

We can't live today on yesterday's power.

Some Christians are trying to run today's ministries on a spiritual tank they filled five or six years ago.

    Doesn't work.

Even our cell phones need charging every day.

If the phone needs charging every day, you need charging every day.

So what happens when people live without the anointing?

Well, let's look at Saul's life a little bit.

The anointing is necessary to properly fulfill God's calling in our lives.

Now, again, I already said this, but this is important.

Saul was anointed as Israel's first king.

And I want you to see what happened to Saul at the very beginning.

    Okay?

1 Samuel 10:1, Samuel anointed Saul.

1 Samuel 10 9, listen to what it says.

So it was when he had turned his back to go from Samuel that God gave him another heart.

Did you know that Saul had a different heart at one time?

Most people forget that completely Saul was given a heart after God before he became the king.

He was given a brand new heart.

It actually says in verse 6 that he became another man.

    Not even the same.

Kind of like a new creation in God.

And in verse 10, he starts prophesying for the very first time.

Remember, this is 1 Samuel chapter 10.

At the end of infancy of his calling all of this is happening but Saul lost touch with God some way shape or form and he started counterfeiting Samuel's anointing You remember the story?

He's not supposed to sacrifice anything to God, but he does.

He does what Samuel is only called and anointed to do.

And the same thing happens today.

People get in the pulpit, people pray over people, and they pretend to have something they do not have.

That is a dangerous road to walk on.

We shouldn't be doing those things.

1 Corinthians 12 teaches us that we all have different gifts. and different anointings, and it is a call to work together and not covet one another's giftings.

Now listen, that doesn't mean you can't pray for other giftings.

    You can pray for them.

And if God is gracious enough to answer your prayer, you could have two or three or four.

I mean, it it's different with everybody.

Sometimes God wants you to persevere in prayer for a little while before he bestows the gift.

    However, Saul lost his anointing.

This is important because Psalm 89. 20 says, I have found my servant David with my holy oil.

    I've anointed him.

The anointing does not belong to you.

    It's God's holy anointing.

He He lends it to us.

He gives it to us on different occasions.

He fills us with it again and again and again.

But ironically Saul continued to operate in his position years after he lost the anointing That's why this pastor asked if the Holy Spirit of God left the church, what would happen?

And he said 90% of the work would just keep on going.

Because momentum is a powerful thing.

You can operate a business on momentum for years.

The product starts going down, but people still love the company and for years they follow it until finally it devolves.

Same thing happens in a church.

A church can can go through its heyday and they can grow to two, three, four, five thousand people.

No more anointing, but it stays large for a number of years and then it slowly starts shrinking.

I've told you before, I've seen sanctuaries of of 3,000 or more That have less than 100 people in the church because the anointing has left.

And those are churches right here in America, probably right here in Florida Number two, David is anointed the second king of Israel.

This is the first of three anointings.

The first David is being set apart to be king, so I would call this a prophetic anointing.

However, we see, and we'll see next week, that immediately something Changes in David too.

This anointing brings a new power source, it brings a new enthusiasm, it brings a new spirit of worship. into his life.

So the impact of the anointing is immediate, although his position does not change immediately.

That doesn't happen until a number of years later, and he's anointed again over two tribes, and then he's eventually anointed over the whole nation.

But I'm going to close with this because this to me wraps up this thing beautifully.

    Jesus was anointed.

I just wouldn't need that to sink in.

Jesus, before he started his ministry on this planted planet, was anointed by the Holy Spirit.

As a matter of fact, the names or titles of Messiah and Christ both mean the anointed one.

So the whole prophetic message was: yes, a savior, a deliverer is coming, but he has to be anointed by the Spirit and the power of God.

And then at his baptism, the scripture tells us that Jesus saw the Spirit of God descending from heaven and landing upon him.

If Jesus needs the Spirit's enablement on this planet, how much more do you and I?

How much more do we need to be anointed?

And then Jesus' words in Luke chapter 4 verse 18, Jesus goes to Nazareth.

And he's asked to read the scripture, and he opens up the scroll to Isaiah chapter 61, and he starts reading: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he hath anointed me.

I mean what he said was so revolutionary that they tried to kill him.

    Do you understand that?

They tried to kill him right Then and there.

And the Bible says he walked through the midst of them.

    You know why?

    Because he had the anointing.

With the anointing you are invincible.

With the anointing you are unstoppable With the anointing, there's no weapon formed against you that can prosper.

We quote that scripture a lot, but we leave out the fact that we need God working with us in order for that to be true.

    Otherwise, weapons Can harm us.

    This is what I know.

If you're a parent, you need the anointing.

If you are a teacher, you need the anointing.

If you're a business owner, you need the anointing.

If you're a grandparent, you need the anointing.

If you're married, you need the anointing.

If you're single, you need the anointing.

If you're a man, if you're a w Woman, you need the anointing.

We should not take another breath without inviting the Holy Spirit to anoint us with everything that is available for us today.

So this is what I'm going to do.

I'm going to ask prayer partners if you'd come forward at this time.

And I have anointing vials sitting down here.

So if you have your own, you can use your own.

If you don't, I have them available.

And uh Even the prayer partners, I want you to anoint one another.

    Okay?

And so we've got some more right here.

So we got two, four, six, seven.

    There's still more over here.

    Everyone have one?

Okay, would you stand with me please?

In my mind, what I envisioned was people coming forward and asking.

As this oil was being pressed against their heads, I was hoping that the Holy Spirit would overwhelm you with his goodness.

That there'd be such a distribution of his anointing in your life that as you walk out the door that you would have the glory of God on your face the same way that Moses did.

If you think that's pie in the sky, I'm here to tell you it's not.

It just takes people who are humble.

It takes people who will submit to the Spirit's leading.

And it takes people who are willing to worship God.

The same as Saul did early in his life.

And the same as David did. his entire life.

We can do the same thing too.

So as the worship team here is singing this next song, which specifically asks the Holy Spirit to come upon us, I just want to invite you to come forward.

    Be anointed with oil.

It's okay if you want them to pray for you also.

    That's relevant.

And you can be here as long as you want.

    Go ahead, team.
