FEELINGS VS FAITH: Who’s in Control?
Preached to: Middle & High School Students
Speaker: Pastor Amanda Hahn
Last night in Amplify Youth, we kicked off our new series, “Feelings vs. Faith: Who’s in Control?” and talked about how God created us with emotions on purpose. Students learned that emotions aren’t bad—but they aren’t meant to lead our lives either. Instead of reacting based on feelings, we’re called to respond with truth and allow God to guide us. Our big takeaway: your emotions are real, but they don’t define your faith—God does.
Keep up with all that’s going on at Amplify Youth, including dates, times, sign-ups, and forms, on our main page.

🍽️ Night 1: “Feelings Are Real… But Are They Right?”
Focus: Understanding emotions
Scripture: Philippians 4:8
Talk About It:
What emotion did you feel the most today? Why?
Have you ever reacted to something and later wished you handled it differently?
Why do you think feelings can sometimes lead us in the wrong direction?
Dig Deeper:
What’s the difference between feeling something and acting on it?
How can we pause before reacting?
Challenge:
👉 This week, when you feel a strong emotion, pause for 5 seconds and ask:
“Is this feeling leading me toward God or away from Him?”🍽️ Night 2: “What Does God Do With Emotions?”
Focus: God understands and models emotions
Scripture: John 11:35 (Jesus wept)
Talk About It:
Does it surprise you that Jesus showed emotion? Why or why not?
Which emotion is hardest for you to express—anger, sadness, fear, or something else?
Do you feel like you can talk to God about your emotions honestly?
Dig Deeper:
Why is it important to bring our emotions to God instead of hiding them?
How might your relationship with God grow if you were more honest with Him?
Challenge:
👉 Take one real emotion you felt today and talk to God about it honestly (no filters).🍽️ Night 3: “React vs. Respond”
Focus: Letting faith lead instead of feelings
Scripture: Romans 8:5-6
Talk About It:
What’s the difference between reacting and responding?
Can you think of a situation this week where you reacted instead of responded?
What would it have looked like to respond in a way that honors God?
Dig Deeper:
What are some triggers that cause you to react quickly?
How can prayer help you slow down in those moments?
Challenge:
👉 Practice this simple rhythm:
Pause → Pray → Respond -
Intro:
Everyone feels emotions daily
Question: Are your emotions leading you, or is your faith?
🧠 Point 1: Emotions Are God-Given
📖 Genesis 1:27
We are created in God’s image
God expresses emotions (love, anger, compassion, joy)
👉 Emotions are not wrong—they’re part of how God designed us
⚖️ Point 2: Emotions Are Signals, Not Leaders
Feelings are real but not always right
The problem isn’t what you feel—it’s how you respond
👉 Don’t follow your feelings—lead them
⚔️ Point 3: There’s a Battle Within
📖 Romans 8:5-6
Flesh = reaction
Spirit = response
👉 You choose which one leads
🧠 Point 4: Train Your Mind
📖 Philippians 4:8
What you think about shapes how you feel
👉 Replace lies with truth
🎯 Application
Identify your biggest emotional trigger
Practice: Pause → Pray → Respond
💬 Big Idea: Your emotions are real, but they don’t define your faith—God does.
🙏 Response
Surrender emotions to God
Ask Him to lead your reactions and responses
